The Multimedia Arts and Design (MAD) Summit 2024, a yearly event of fourth-year MMA students of De La Salle Lipa (DLSL), featured different unconventional artists as guest speakers who emphasize on the subjectivity of art at the Sentrum, June 1.

Lia Candelario, also known as KosmikLia, the first guest speaker of the event explained how she found her ikigai or purpose in life through art and photography, discussing different topics such as discovering digital photography, transitioning to analog photography, merging mediums and monetizing skills and building clients.

“Ikigai means it is the value of your life or your reason of being. It is a combination of four things [which are] what you love, what you are good at, what can be made for and what the world needs. […] So it is a combination of your passion, mission, profession, and vocation,” Candelario stated.

In an interview, Rogger Basco, an artist and educator, shared his thoughts about how his fellow speakers would express their creativity and passion with other students, especially on how to improve their skills in art.

“To be creative, they have to acknowledge their thoughts and feelings. To improve that, they have to go out, experience a lot of things, go to events, and [get to] know people because that’s where they’re going to learn how to encounter feelings for their future projects”, said Basco.

Likewise, the event also featured other artists including Rai Cruz, Kenneth Mikael Montenegro also known as Tomatoface, Dasu, and Pasahero who chose to stay anonymous presenting a prerecorded video.

With the event being open to all multimedia-enthusiasts, Ryu Terrobias, a 4th year MMA student from the First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) Colleges shared their thoughts on attending the MAD Summit for the first time.

“Attending this Summit itself, I was rather blown away with how receptive everything was […] how each of the production crew has been working very hard and I’m very blown away […] the amount of time that was behind the entire event was fulfilled and I’m proud to be part of the event because it is my first time here”, said Terrobias.

MAD Summit 2024 Executive Director, Adrianne Perez, explains this year’s event will focus on embracing the unconventionality of art. (J. Lagmay)

In an interview with Adrianne Perez, the Executive Director of MAD Summit 2024, the theme of the event aimed to encourage students to freely express art, showcase young artist’s art style, and alter other people’s objective perception regarding it.

“Yung theme ng event namin is MMAlaya: Art Unleashed, ang meaning po nung malaya is you can freely express art kasi art is very subjective. […] So ngayon, ang gusto naming i-embrace yung mga imperfects [or] unconventionality ng art […] and yung goal namin is para sa mga young artist na ma-discover din nila ang kanilang art style,” said Perez.
