Through a mandatory online plebiscite from the students, the De La Salle Lipa-Student Government (SG) amended their constitution, after gaining in-favor votes from 59% the entire college population, May 8.
A total of 2,075 votes were gathered from the online voting through a Google Form managed by the DLSL Committee on Election (Comelec), where 1,941 or 93.50% voted yes, while 134 or 6.5% opposed the changes.
Prior to the online plebiscite, portions of the revised constitution were posted on the SG Facebook page.
According to Executive President Serine Obviar, the main objectives of the revision were to elaborate the bill of student rights, make changes to the structure of the SG and separate the SG from the supervision of the Student Activities Office.
She also shared that the consultations for the constitution revision started last year, and was initiated by the former SG administration.
Meanwhile, the drafting of the revisions was done by a constitutional committee which consisted of a Comelec representative, a representative per college council, two SG executives, the student activities officer, the director for student services, and three members of the student body who are not affiliated in any organization.
“Madami pang dapat palitan sa constitution and ‘yung meetings namin, I believe, ay hindi pa rin enough [para] maging perfect ‘yung revisions… Pero for now, I believe na okay ‘yun for the next administrations – makakatulong ‘yun sa kanila,” Obviar said.
The online voting ran for a week, and it was announced through the SG’s Facebook page that clearances of students who will not cast their votes will be put on hold.
